Two experiments were conducted using lactating Friesian-Holstein cows to measure the effects of heat stress under the Mediterranean climate, on rectal temperature (RT), milk production, respiration rate (RR), heart rate (HR), dry matter intake (DMI) and feed digestibility (FD). The hot environmental temperature had an effect on RT, RR and on HR. They were significantly higher in the heat-stressing treatment, they are respectively 39.39, 79.41 and 78.06 for THI=83.27; whereas they are respectively equal to 38.15, 43.77 and 61.99 for THI=65.62, in average THI values (83.91 ±1.3 vs. 65.62 ± 1.98) in summer and spring period. We can conclude an increase in the daily milk yield In dairy cows, under Tunisian summer conditions. Comparing hot and cold weather, digestibility was higher in summer (68.5% vs. 66.5% in spring), dry matter intake declined more rapidly with increasing temperature (18.28 Kg/d vs. 21.31 Kg/d). The yields of milk fat and protein have not a significant variation, but results show a sign ificant increase in Somatic Cell Counts (SCC).

Effect of Metabolic Stress on Ovarian Activity and Reproductive Performance of Dairy Cattle: A Review
Reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle has been decreased over the last 5 decades despite significant gains in genetic selection, improved reproductive technologies and nutritional care. In high-yielding dairy cattle, the negative energy balance (NEB) during the first week post-partum adversely affects ovarian activity, mainly follicle growth and steroidogenesis. Circulating levels of non-este...

J.F. Smith Animal Sciences and Industry Kansas State University When reducing heat stress in dairy herds, fans are used to enhance the evaporation of moisture from a cow’s back. Fan selection should be based on performance rather than horsepower and diameter. Certified lab studies of similar size fans show a 50 percent difference in airflow rate per unit of input energy. Maintenance is importan...

Calving records from April 1996 to December 2005 comprising 31863 calving events of 1173 dairy cows in a large commercial dairy herd were used to evaluate the effects of heat stress, using temperature-humidity index (THI) on milk yield and composition and reproductive performance of Holstein dairy cows under humid climatic conditions of Rasht in Iran. THI values were grouped into six groups: 30...

The variation in climatic variables like temperature, humidity and radiations were recognized as the potential hazards in the growth and production of all domestic livestock species. Thermal environment is a major factor that can negatively affect both production and reproduction in dairy animals, especially in animals of high genetic merit. Among the stressors, heat stress has been of major co...
